I have now found a torx screwdriver to take off the pcb and sure enoug
theres a bit of melted insulation and a couple of blackened and twiste
chips, hope I haven't damaged any of the drive internals!

It is common knowledge that when you attach both power connectors, you
*will* damage it. In other words: you destroyed it.
