We run a pure w2k native domain and have been looking for a few basic
nas box's to act purely as an online local backup mirror of existing w2k
file servers.

When the servers fail I want users to have access to the live data
mirror without too much hassle.

Im thinking of using DFS to sync the data and point to the nas box which
should mean I end up with automatic failover but do nas boxes
participate in active directory to this level ... ive never used one?

Ive seen a variety of cheap ones with their own OS which dont appear to
support active directory, snap servers that have some sort of support
and then box's with win2003 storage server which appear to have full
support.

Would the ideal solution be the w2003 storage server based box's to be
able to do what i want?
