I have an extra 40gb drive and alot of pic files on my computer... does this
idea make any cents? does the folder need to be cleared out completey first?
pros/cons?

You should be able to copy the contents over to that drive and mount that
drive under the Documents and Settings folder with or without removing the
data in that folder first.
