I've got a partition reserved for windows only (c:) but, it seems like some
programs / utilities attach themselves to c:\program files by default and
with no option to redirect. As a result, my windows partition is too full and
badly fragmented. I've removed what I can and have generated 30% free space
on the windows partition (about 1.5 Gb free), but there are still a number of
files that will not defrag ...

What's the next step in defrag'ing files that the defrag utility can't seem
to handle?

Which OS are you using? The defrag utility was updated over time to defrag
more types of files/structures (e.g. MFT).

I'm running XP Home Edition with all current updates. The MFT file is one of
the fragmented files (50% in use; 70Mb size; 25 fragments).

The MFT will potentially fragment when the free disk space drops below 12.5%
(i.e. 1/8). The FileSystem pre-reserves 1/8 of the drive for it to prevent
fragmentation but will release the unused space if there is demand for it.
Most likely when you got to a very low state most of the fragments were
created. Defragging this would be unlikely to yield much (if any) of a perf
improvement.

As to the other files, the Windows Defragger will skip files if it is unable
to create a contiguous space for them in the first pass- i.e. no partial
defragments & no recursive defragmentations. I have a Media PC and this
happens periodically when I defragment the drive with all the recorded
TV/Movies. The files are very large (1.5GB+) and skips are fairly common.

You have a couple of choices:
1) You can free up more space and re-try. Or just re-try the defrag.
2) Use a different defrag utility. There are several out there that have a
different behavior - including defragging of specific files and/or
directories.

Thanks Pat, I'll look around for another defrag utility. It sounds like the
repair of my MFT file isn't worth the bother but maybe I can fix some of the
others. I appreciate the help.
