how many virtual channels in router |

hi
I am trying implementing a packet router in multiprocessor system. The
router has 5 ports in total.
Problem is how many virtual channels are necessary to make sure to
avoid deadlock.
In my understanding, we need 4 virtual channels per port. That is, we
need n-1 virtual channels (per port) in n port router. I have read some
books and articles, but not yet found exactly how many are required :)
