MPIO support with Initiator HBAs |
|
|
Hi,
To be able to establish multiple paths to the target devices, is it required
to add explicit support/functionality for MPIO in the miniport driver of the
iSCSI Initiator HBAs as well ? Or is it transparent to the initiator driver?
With the MS initator, I'm able to use MPIO in the expected fashion, ie.
multiple sessions established to the target via different paths result in
presenting one logical instance of each target LUN. But when I use a HW
initiator to connect to the same target, the LUNs from each session show up
as a different device altogether. Also, the device description does not show
as "Multi-path support" like it does when logged in from the MS initiator.
I am wondering if "Enable multi-path" check box is the Initiator GUI is
functional only for the Soft initiator or does it work for other initiators
as well? Or for it to work, does the hba driver need to export/advertize
special capabilities?
Thanks,

All HBA vendors are required to work with MPIO, so check with the vendor of
your HBA and the vendor of the target for correct configuration. We know of
some HBA bugs that might cause this to not work.
To use multiple paths through multiple HBAs (or a combination of HBA and
NICs), you will need to use MPIO. If you only use the software initiator,
you can use multiple connections per session instead.
