problem decrypting files encrypted with windows vista |
|
|
I have a few files, encrypted using windows vista Beta 1 on a USB
drive.
I got the certificate (fingerprint is ok) imported on windows xp, but I
can't access these files anymore.
The Fingerprint in the certificate store is the same as efsinfo /c does
show for these files, so they should be decryptable by all means.
Has encryption changed in vista? Do I need to install windows vista
again just to decrypt these files?

If you don't get a response I'd recommend that you try in the private Vista
groups that you should be able to access if you had access to Vista.

Hah - good point... If it's an MSDN subscription you don't get
access to the beta newsgroups do you? I just rooted through the MSDN
subscriber stuff after logging in and couldn't figure out a way to
access it. It's not in the list of managed newsgroups either (of
course) so, well, I'm going to go ping people in the private beta
groups and see if they might know your answer and if they're willing
to post here.
Well, at least I can't find no beta newsgroups, so I'd guess I can't
access it (or am too blind to see them).
It would be really nice if you can ask someone - I'd really love to
know if I can't decrypt 'cause efs has changed, or if it's got some
other reason (pity I got no spare comp right now to install vista on.
And I can't access usb drives from virtualpc).
Thanks!

Sent to the general group there. There's a filesystem.local but I figured a
wider audience would be found in the general group.

Oh, there are private vista groups? I got Vista Beta 1 using my MSDN
subscription, I didn't note there are support groups for it.
So there is some vista forum in the MSDN download section, or what are
you trying to tell me?

Sharon F (another MVP) has also taken the time to point out that there were
some updates to the NTFS system and that you may need to re-install Vista to
access those files.
Best of luck with your quest, I'll be checking the Vista private groups in a
little while and if there's anything new that can be posted in here I will
do so.

Hi Sam,
When you exported the certificates on XP, did you choose to export a private
key as well?
As for Vista feedback, if you want to submit any bug you need to use MS Beta
Client available for download at the MS Connect portal. At the same place,
if you click on Community, there are instructions on how to setup your NNTP
client in order to access private Vista newsgroups.
Hope this helps.

Well, a change in EFS in Vista is no bug, it probably rather is a
feature. I just wanted to know if file EFS *has* been changed in vista
- pity no one knows for sure.
One of these days I find some time to reinstall vista and check if
decrypting is possible then.
