Hello All,

I ordered a Powervault 745n, with 'Windows Storage Server'.

I have a few questions...

1. When I run winver it says "Windows Server 2003 Appliance Edition" and
when I click the START menu, it says "Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition".
SHOULD IT SAY "Windows Storage Server" anywhere?

2. I can not find any software on the server that says it is "Storage" or
"Backup" software, outside of the normal 'limited' microsoft backup. Is
there suppose to be a big obvious program called "Windows Storage Server"
that lets me schedule backups and would replace other 'Major' backup software
applications, like the one from Computer Associates?

I may have more questions, but, answers to these questions would be very
helpful...

thanks

The PV745 is a Windows Storage Server, which is just Windows Server 2003
with some added functionality and special licensing.
The PV 745 includes MS Backup, but you can install a commerical backup
application if you like. Windows Storage server is a file server. You can
use it for backup's, but you will need to install backup software. Some
Dell customers use it for a backup to disk solution. Some good programs to
replicate information from your production to the 745 would be Legato
Replistore or NSI Doubletake.
Replistore has a free 30 trail copy, and if purchased through Dell for the
745 will be fully supported by Dell.

OK... thanks.....

1. Do you have an opinion on ArcServe (I already have that software..) .

2. Also, maybe a stupid question.... but, what is the recommended way to get
software running on the PV745????? No CD Drive?

2nd Follow-up ...

I think I missed the point.... you would recommend that NO Backup software
should run on the PV745, right?

I should just link to it from somewhere else?

That actually makes sense...

what about the NOD32 Antivirus software that came with it, that is suppose
to run on Windows Storage Server?

thanks...

While ArcServe is a good program, it is not one of my favorite choices.

The easiest way to get software installed onto the 745 is to copy the
software onto the 745 via a network share, or map a shared drive on other
server. i.e. share your CDrom from another system to the 745.

NOD 32 is recommended because it has a smaller footprint than other
antivirus software. However you can run any antivirus software you wish,
provided that if Dell support suspects it is causing a problem you can
uninstall it.

You can install Backup Exec for Storage Server if you need backup software
that has been tested on Windows Storage server. I believe there may be a
demo copy included. You can also install full version of any backup
software if you like, but the same recommendation I stated above applies.
