Hi!

Man, do I miss the time when you could backup the NT4 server with
ntbackup.exe ( don't get me wrong!! That's about the only thing I miss about
NT4!!!). The application was quite crappy, but if you had a singel server
with some kind of tape drive, the backup did just what you told it to do.

But, this is a bad application that MS really managed to make even
worse....!!!! Now, when the have implemented some kind of intelligence
(??!!????) by adding the rsm to the system, an unattended, scripted backup
isn't as simple to create as in the old days.

Sorry, had to get that one off my chest!

Does anyone have templates of WORKING command files, which would do the
following thing: Full backup once a week, Differential backup the rest of
the week nights, appended to the full backup tape?

I've been browsing the web searching for hints, but no luck.

Thanks, guys!!

What problems do you have with the RSM?

Usually the only entry in the backup.log is:
The operation was not performed because the specified media cannot be found.

Is there any way to "go around" the media management and simply use the tape
that is inserted in the tapedrive?

This is possible with the "/UM" switch. You must use this switch with
"/P"(=Poolname).

It's all documented in ntbackup help.

Yep, works fine when you make a full backup every night to different tapes.
But /um -switch won't do no good when first making a full backup to a tape,
then appending differential backups to the same tape (maybe I'm wrong....?).

But, I think I'll use a Legato Networker Storage Node instead. That way I
can manage the backups/restores from the same management console as for all
the other servers.

Thanks though....

I have a 4MM DDS tape drive on my 2000 server. I opened backup and created
a full backup routine to backup all local drives and the System State and
saved it to "C:\Winnt\Full.bks". I then put the following line in the
scheduler to go off at midnight each night.

ntbackup backup "@C:\Winnt\Full.bks" /P "4mm DDS" /j "Full Backup with
System State" /um /v:yes /r:yes /rs:no /hc:on /m normal /l:s

Since I only have a single tape drive in this server I the /UM only has one
choice. I would guess that you could leave off the /UM and replace it with
the /a to append to the current media in the drive.

I am still in the early planning stages of this setup, but here is what I am
planning. I personally don't like leaving the full backup on site incase of
fire or flood so I do a full backup on the weekend and take the tape and
carry it in my carry bag to and from work. Then during the week I do a
differential to backup only the changed files since the last full backup and
take that tape as well in the morning. After each differential backup, I
return the previous nights to the fire box and only hold the last full and
the last differential so if the server crashes, I only need two tapes to
fully restore to the latest image.

For the Differential script I am not positive on what I am going to do
because I have not tested it, but I would believe it would be one of two
things. Either open the "Full.bks" file I created and change the backup
type in the options to differential and save it as Differential.bks and use
the same settings as above and replace "Full.bks". Or use the same
"Full.bks" file above and script, but modify it to change the backup type in
the script like this:

ntbackup backup "@C:\Winnt\Full.bks" /P "4mm DDS" /j "Full Backup with
System State" /um /m differential /v:yes /r:yes /rs:no /hc:on /m normal
/l:s

This is the same as the script as the top, but I added "/m diffential".

Sorry, I mis-typed the command

ntbackup backup "@C:\Winnt\Full.bks" /P "4mm DDS" /j "Full Backup with
System State" /um /m differential /v:yes /r:yes /rs:no /hc:on /l:s
