I am backing up a selection of folders & files to a backup file on another drive. (about 40K files, <14Gb
There is plenty of room for a backup log (5+ Gb) and for the backup file (20+ Gb)
I am running XP Pro SP1, with all thew latest patches on a PC with twin AMD MP200 processors and 1Gb of RAM

The event viewer says 'operation completed'; the task manager says 'running'; yet the aplication will not finish, exit, respond.

It will not even refresh its own window display

I cannot shutdown the computer without literally switching power off at the socket :-

When the machine has restarted, backup shows the backup file, has a full catalogue of the contents, but trying to restore from the

catalogue results in ntBackup hanging again before the first few bytes are written

The information scattered about my system shows contradictory messages ..

1. In the Management console ... Event viewer ... Application there is an event (ID:8001 Source:ntBackup)saying
End Backup of 'D:'
The operation was successfully completed.

Verify: On
Mode: Append
Type: Normal

Consult the backup report for more details

2. In ntBackup, the display shows that all the files have been backed up, but it has not moved over to the 'summary screen' (with

the show report button etc.). ntBackup will not refresh its windows should another application window be moved in front of it. I

would say that the program was not responding except ..

3. Task manager shows the application as 'running'. However, it will not allow me to terminate the program

4. The backup log file has remained at 0 bytes, and is currently locked by another user (presumably ntBackup itself), so this is

not a source of help

To further add to my confusion, This does not occur with all backup sets! but it does occur with many difeerent selections. I

cannot yet work out which, since this is a time consuming operation, waiting to the end of a backup before success (or failure is

known)

I wondered if I had a problem with some of my files. All of my disks use NTFS, which when scanned by scandisk reports that there

are no problems

I have now reached the extent of my knowledge as to where to turn next
I would be extremely grateful if anybody has any suggestions

Many Thanks
Martin

PS. Another issue that I have just noticed, is that when I do manage a successful backup, backup will only write to the file backup05.log (or similar). Subsequent backups (or failures) will overwrite this file, but will not touch backup01.log, backup02.log etc

The first thing I would do is to verify the hardware. Have you run memtest86
on the PC to verify that your memory is good? It is a free download.
http://www.memtest86.com/

Are you backing up to a drive in the same PC or across the network? If the
same PC, is it on the same controller?

Can you move that much data manually to the same location?
