I am installing a management application on my WSS and am being tol
that the installation was aborted by the user (me), but I did nothing.
Is there some restriction that says MSDE can not be installed on a WS
system

You should be able to install MSDE. (If it was restricted, you would see
"Access Denied")

Thing that come to mind initially that may be the culprit (although not from
MSDE experience, but other apps):
- Do you have sufficient permissions? (Are you logged on as admin)
- What is the state of your memory (this can happen in low memory
situations)?

But more telling, did setup get far enough along to leave you a log?
