I have a client who is wondering if this is possible:

Having all thier W2K OS servers boot off a soon to be deployed EMC DMZ (or
CX) SAN.

Or does that require Windows 2003?

Thanks

It is possible to boot from a SAN, but they (or you) will need to get w/EMC.
Only very specific combinations (Fibre Card, switch, Storage box, etc.) are
supported (i.e. you have to spec this from the beginning) to do this by EMC.
One other note, is to consider what this would mean if the SAN failed (due
to either internal or external factors). You lose the ability to boot all
machines connected (including the ability to run diagnostics on the SAN...).
Granted, most or all of the interesting data would be on the SAN anyway, but
you could end up w/a dark datacenter if you over consolidate.

As to the Win2k vs. Win2k3, obviously I have a vested interest in the
selection of Win2k3...But, you can do this with Win2k (again, check w/EMC
for the support story/concerns). Win2k3 is more SAN friendly and you may
want to look at what features it enables.
