Recommend? LAN backup solution for disaster recovery |
|
|
Hi,
(I'm a newbie to this group. If I should be posting elsewhere, please
let me know where.)
I have a LAN with 3 PCs running Windows XP. At the moment I plug a USB
drive into each PC separately and run a Dantz Retrospect backup, which
gives me disaster recovery.
I want a solution that will let me connect an external drive direct to
the LAN and backup all 3 PCs, not just for file backup but for full
disaster recovery of any of the PCs. I expect each PC will need its own
bootable Disaster Recovery CD, but after that I'd like to be able to
complete the recovery over the network.
Please can you recommend a solution. (I'm more interested in robustness
and ease-of-use than cheapness.)
Thanks,
Paul. |

Easiest (and cheapest) thing for you to do would be to get a US
Server, attach it directly to the LAN at the Router, and use that t
back up each machine to a big USB drive. It will also allow you t
share a USB printer, or any other USB device.
The caveat is that you can only access the drive from one machine at
time, and have to log off each machine to get access from another.
I use a Keyspan USB Server with WinXP on our home network to b/u my p
and my wife's pc using Acronis True Image 9.0, a great tool for ful
system image backups... Did have a few driver issues, but once
upgraded the firmware of the Keyspan server, they cleared up.
Good luc
