Backup from NAS to tape libary |
|
|
Hi, We are shortly taking delivery of a 1.3TB NAS box that has Windows Storage Server 2003 and would like to use Storage Server to backup files to a SONY LIB81 AIT2 tape library. Is it possible using Storage Server to do a full backup rotation daily, weekly etc to an 8 slot tape library and to schedule the backups. I know that I could use Veritas but this would be an additional cost and would be the 'straw that breaks the camel's back' as far as cost is concerened for us.
Someone mentioned that they think Storage Server comes with a 'cut down' version of backup software, is this true? Where can I find information regarding the backup utility that comes with Storage Server 2003 and how flexible it is. I'm not very experienced with backup in general and a NAS box and tape library is new territory for me, I would welcome any help or advice.
Thanks very much,
Gill |

Storage Server 2003 comes with NTBackup by default. I do not believe that
it supports tape libraries. Though you could take the backup file that it
produces and use your current backup solution to move it to tape.
Some OEMs include a 'lite' version of various backup utilities, though you
would need to check with the vendor to see what version that they provide.
My experience has been, however, that the 'lite' versions do not support
tape libraries.
If you already own Veritas, you could run the agent in the NAS server and
backup on whatever you are using now. You would need to check with Veritas
for licensing, etc. requirements.

That would see very strange that Storage Server would not support libraries
when Server does. I certainly hope that you are mistaken because it doesn't
makes sense to have the system designed for higher data capacity to have
less backup functionality.

The NTBackup that comes with Storage Server is identical to the one that
comes with Windows Server 2003. WRT tape libraries, I stand corrected.

Many of the library products ship the necessary drivers and software for
backup applications to use them. I would check with Sony (I don't know the
details of the particular tape library you mention below) and see what comes
with the library or what may be available as an add-on.
You can then choose the backup product that you are familiar with or qualify
for your shop. Most of the 3rd party backup product development teams
jointly develop and test with the Tape Library companies' development teams
to ensure their products work together.
You will, of course, need to confirm this for the products that you are
interesting in working together.
