You could definately go with network attached storage, but you might want to
look at some SAN offereings. Since it's just for backup you can do it
relatively cheap (under $20K) with some of the serial ATA offereings that
are out there. Fibre channel drives and the speed of the controller
(usually related to the amount of cache on the controller) can drive the
price of a SAN up, since this is for backing up then it's feasible to use
the lower cost SATA solutions with the slower controllers, it may also make
redundancy a little easier than with a NAS solution. I haven't looked into
it, but you may even be able to get rid of the fibre channel interface to
the for a cheaper iSCSI solution. Just some options to consider. We're
looking at purchasing a SAN, only for live production purposes, and the
options are enough to make your head explode.
