Hi,

I need a little advice how to do the swap of the boot interfaces.

We have an EMC environment (Symmetrix)
and are changing from SCSI-attached (Adp.2944)
to Fabric-attached (lp9002-emc + lp9802-emc)

Boot disk (Win2K) is already inside the Symm. but still connected via SCSI

What we've planned (but not tested yet):
1) install FC-HBA in SCSI-Boot-OS
2) install+configure emulex driver in SCSI-OS
3) install emulex tools in SCSI-OS
4) install Boot-BIOS on HBA
5) configure Symm. (LUN masking) to present Boot-Disk via Fibre
6) reboot Win2k (swap from SCSI-OS to Fibre-OS)
7) everything up and running (hopefully???)

Do you think the procedure described above will do the trick?

If NOT, what should/could be done better?
Any tips/hints welcome.

Thanks -sg-

Don't forget to modify your ARC path in the boot.ini file (if necessary) to
point to the proper adapter/disks.

Additional thoughts.

1) Emulex LP9002 Boot BIOS setting requires you to enter the Boot LUN number
in HEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Sorry, hurt my head on this before :-) )

2) Changing from Direct Attached Storage (DAS) to Storage Area Network (SAN)
enables a LOT of potential improvements.
Most notably, Multipath capabilities. You can remove the single point of
failure of the SCSI cable by adding multiple HBAs BUT to do this correctly
requires multipathing software from EMC. Their product is called PowerPath.
NOTE: If you are using Windows Server 2003, you will want their Microsoft
MPIO implementation.
See information at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/storage/technologies/mpio/default.mspx
on MS MPIO.
See information at
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/storage/technologies/bootfromsan/default.mspx
on Boot from SAN.

3) On quick review of your steps below, I believe this will work with John's
additional comment about the boot.ini changes.

BTW, once you've completed your transition, I would love to see your
feedback on how it went. Anything we may have missed
or suggestions to improve upon your steps below.
