DFS and WSS

Postby markd » Wed Mar 31, 2004 2:52 am

Hi

How many DFS roots can an instance of WSS accomodate?
I have seen conflicting information on the subject. My current understanding
is that WSS should only support a single DFS root as it is based on Server
Standard. However the deployment guide for WSS seems to contradict this:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsservers ... eploy.mspx
"With the latest version of the server operating system, DFS has been
enhanced to allow multiple DFS roots on a single server"

And today I have come across an MS reference to Windows Storage Server 2003
Enterprise Edition! However, a site search does not reveal any references to
this product - I only came across it in an email I was sent regarding the
File Server Consolidation beta program.

So, does WSS based on Server Standard support multiple DFS roots on one
server?

If not, how can I get my OEM to install WSS Enterprise? Is it as easy as
installing Server Enterprise and then applying the Appliance Kit?

Grateful for any light anyone can shed on this...

Thanks, Mark.

Windows Storage Server 2003 has multiple SKUs (or editions). Some are based
on Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, and some are based on Windows
Server 2003 Standard Edition. Please contact your OEM to see which Editions
of Windows Storage Server 2003 they ship.

Michael

Thanks for clearing this up for me. Are all the SKU's available
internationally (specifically in Europe)?

Thanks, Mark.

hi Mark,

I am sorry I cannot shed any more light on this, but it really depends on
the OEM (and where they are sellling). You have to ask some of those OEMs
directly. That said, I am not aware of any restrictions for Europe.
