PS2 to PS3 transition (Cell question)

Postby Guest » Fri Dec 02, 2005 5:09 pm

Hello,
Will programming for the Cell chip be a superset of programming for the
current PS2? The reason I ask is because I don't know the PS2, if I DO
make the time and spend the effort, it won't be obsoleted in 6 months
time, will it?
The specific question I'm asking is, is the Cell a SUPERSET of the PS2
processor - not *capability* wise, but instruction set wise, like a P4
is a superset of a P3, or is it a different animal altogether (with
some compatibility mode or whatever for existing PS2 games)?

Thanks.

It isn't. As far as I can tell. The PS2 CPU was MIPS derived,
the PS3 CPU is PowerPC derived. Totally different beast.

Yep. The PS2's VUs are also different from the PS3's SPEs.
