Replicating/Syncronizing Data??? |
|
|
In our video department we have a simple P4 Xeon "file server" running XP Pro, as its sole task is to serve up large video files to a small network of video editing workstations and store graphics from a handful of graphics workstations. However, the capacity is relatively large at 2 Terabyte of file space. For data security, we have a second 2TB machine in a different office (same building) that serves strictly as a backup machine over a 100BT network, which is adequate for incremental backups
We currently use a small utility called "Folder Clone" that "syncronizes," at scheduled one-hour intervals, the two arrays which will allow us to immediately re-map the backup machine in the event of catastrophic failure of the primary
However, while this solution actually works well, I would like to know if WinXP Pro or 2000 Server (OS on backup machine) has a built-in service or ability to perform either real-time or scheduled file syncronization? I'd prefer to use an existing service -- especially if it's realtime -- over a small shareware utility (even one that works this well)
Thanks

You will probably want to look into FRS on Windows 2000 (File Replication
Service:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/samplechapters/dsdh/dsdh_frs_ncpi.asp )
However, with Windows Storage Server 2003 you get additional handy features
like Volume Shadow Copy Service
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsserversystem/wss2003/techinfo/plandeploy/st
ormgtusingvdsvss.mspx)
Both could be quite useful in your context.
