How to enable my database to be a VSS Writer? |
|
|
The bits and pieces I find about Volume Shadow Copy services state that
applications can be aware of "storage events" such as when a shadow copy is
being made. What I want to know is, "How?" Is there some documentation for
the interfaces/functions required for this?? For the past couple of years,
we've been doing our own SAN-enabling for backups, across a bunch of
different SAN platforms, writing our own "abstraction layer" for SANs, but
it would be nice to also be able to do this with the VSS implementation.
When XP came out with Volume Shadow Copy services, it looked like exactly
what we were doing (except of course we were only writing the technology for
our applications), and I said to myself we ought to watch this. Now I see
that there are backup vendors interfacing to this, and hardware vendors too.
And "major" software vendors.
Everything I've read talks about SQL Server, Exchange, AD, etc., but I want
to "VSS enable" my database engine. Apparently this involves a "VSS Writer"
but I can't find anything on how to do that. Help?

Tom, you're exactly right -- your database needs a VSS Writer, which
quiesces it so that a snapshot can take place. I'll pass your contact info
to our VSS team.
