iSCSI without WSS2003? |
|
|
For my home office, can I build my own storage server without WSS2003? I do
not need the volume backup etc features. I intend:
1. Build PC1 with a cheap SATA Raid adaptor. Plug in 3 x 250G SATA disks
(for RAID 5). Install Windows Server 2000/2003 Standard Edition. Install MS
iSCSI Initiator. i.e. PC1 is my storage server.
2. Build PC2 (as file server and MS SQL Server). Install MS iSCSI Initiator.
Can I then mount a drive on PC2 to use the storage in PC1? And store my MS
SQL Server database in this new drive?
Thanks |

ooooh wish it was so simple!
WSS can only be a iSCSI initiator, which means the server can connect to
a iSCSI target and not accept iSCSI connections.
what you need is an iSCSI target to build a storage server. There are a few
software only iSCSI targets available out there that you can install on the
WSS2003 system. The recent one in the news is from DataCore called
SANmelody. They offer a trial version. I haven't used it though.

I meant Windows 2000/2003 server not WSS2003 on which you can install the
iSCSI target.

I know I can not buy WSS2003.
But can WSS2003 act as iSCSI target? Or I must add in additional
software/hardware?
Thanks

Nor WSS2003 neither Windows Server 2003 can act as iSCSI target at today.
But soon a new software will be out (WinTarget at
http://www.stringbeansoftware.com) and you can transform any Windows
platform in a iSCSI target.
BTW AFAIK WinTarget is the only iSCSI target software for Windows platform
existing around.

Not True! SANMelody from DataCore is already out there.

Hi,
I have a trial version of SANMelody working, but I'm having some problems.
I'm trying to map the same virtual volume to more than one server, so each
of then can access the files.
The problem is that changes made by one server in a file are not reflected
in the same file saw by the other servers.
Can I do this kind of configuration?
Thanks,
Alexandre

Its not supported! and is dangerous to do unless you have a Clustering
solution in place.
You must understand that the virtual volume is a block level device and not
a file share that can be accessed by multiple systems.

| FalconStor also has an offering, called iSCSI Storage Server (powered by IPStor) for Windows Storage Server 2003. |
