NTFS disk space allocation strategy |
|
|
I need to make some estimates of the lifetime of a deleted file's remnants.
For that, I'd like to know how NTFS chooses the block of unallocated space
it will allocate next.
My guess is that it's either a "first fit" or "best fit", when scanning its
collection of unallocated blocks. Both would tend to favor re-use of
previously allocated space, over allocation of "virgin" disk space.
Does anyone know how these choices are made? Is this documented anywhere?
Somewhere I have a copy of Cutler's NTFS book, but it's been so long since I
last read it, it's near the bottom of a dusty stack somewhere. Anyone
remember if she discusses these issues?
Thanks!
