As with all seemingly simple questions, the answer is that it depends. A
basic partition is limited to 2TB, and it is possible to go to 64TB with
dynamic volumes (the limit is the result of the number of bits available to
describe the clusters). Your idea of using DFS to create the functional
equivalent is definitely the way to go (you can get as big as you want).
You can stitch together multiple partitions into whatever size you need.
This also gets around the big caveat with large volumes, which is: what
happens in a chkdsk situation?
