I am having a big problem with windows explorer in Win XP pro. I am
using a store bought version and have downloaded all the updates
including sp2. I have beenfor using several years with no problems.

Just this week Window explorer hangs and the Windows Task Manager
shows that the program is not responding. It will just stay that way
forever unless I tell it to end the task. Sometimes this task ending
procedure takes some time to do.

Is there a way to update Windows Exploreror re install the program
other than doing a total re install of win XP pro.

This problem looks like some virus, etc... but I have scanned with
Norton antivirus and with Ad-Aware SE and Spybot. Didn't find
anything. If it were a virus it would be perfect as it won't let me
play or delete files. I can navigate to files and folders, but when I
try to do anything with them they hand up.

I do have a lot of large avi video files on my computer if that would
mean anything.

Any help woud be greatly appreciated as I really don't wanat to do a
re install.

Oh yes, Dr. Watson doesn't appear to be working and the restore file
shows that there aren't any restore points. Not sure why this
happened.

thanks

rb

ps, this is what the error signature shows (in Windows Task Manager)

szAppName: explorer.exe szAppVer: 6.02900.2180 szModName: hungapp
szModVer: 0.0.0. offset: 00000000

the error contents include the following:

C.DOCUME~1\roscoe\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa566.dir00\explorer.exe.mdmp

C.DOCUME~1\roscoe\LOCALS~1\Temp\WERa566.dir00\appcompat.txt

Hi, sorry i dont know how to fix your IE except you might be able to get the

ie6setup.exe file off the microsoft site?
Just thought I would let you and everyone else know, just because your
antivirus (especially Norton) does not find any malware/virus does not mean
you are not infected. Ive proved this on many occasions on many different
systems. One of the best antivirus programs ive found which seems to get them
all is EZ Antivirus. I use at least 2 virus-protection programs when doing
system checks just to be sure.
I have found Norton, McAfee, and AVG miss many.
P.S. of course they are updated too.

Thanks for the advice. I will try another antivirus.

BTW it is the windows explorer that's giving me problems. The ie
explorer is working fine.

Hi, Roscoe.

Yes, there are at least two ways.

The first is the System File Checker. At the Run prompt, enter "sfc
/scannow" (without the quotes). SFC will compare each WinXP operating
system file with the "known good" copy held in your on-disk cache and
replace any missing or damaged ones. Have your WinXP CD-ROM handy; SFC
probably will need to see that.

If that doesn't help, the next step may be an "in-place upgrade", also known
as a "repair install" or simply as a reinstallation. Full details are in
this KB article:

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/315341/

Or you may prefer Michael Stevens' version of the same instructions:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

The in-place upgrade will reinstall WinXP itself while preserving your
installed applications and data - and most of your tweaks. Afterwards, as
soon as you get your firewall and antivirus back in place, be sure to visit
Windows Update to be sure you have all the latest fixes.

Have you tried to defragment your hard drive?

You say you have a lot of large avi files on your hard drive, if the drive
is extremely fragmented, you may have trouble navigating with windows
explorer.
