Jabez Gan Thanks for your well defined instructions. As soon as I am home
again with the computers mentioned, I will implement the solution you have
recommended.
In the meantime please accept my thanks and expression of appreciation. I
hope you and yours are enjoying the Christmas and New Year Holidays.

There's a bug in the XP NTFS FIlesystem and it prevents you to delete
files
(the transfer/copying somehow got screwed).
Please try :
START | RUN | CMD
CD to your directory.
Use: DIR /X /A to see the SHORT FILE NAMES of the files and directories
there.
use:
RMDIR [/Q] [drive:]path
RD [/Q] [drive:]path
/S Removes all directories and files in the specified directory
in addition to the directory itself. Used to remove a
directory
tree.
/Q Quiet mode, do not ask if ok to remove a directory tree with
/S
Example:
RMDIR /Q c:\progra~1\McAfee~1
RD /Q c:\progra~1\McAfee~1
If that doesn't work, try:

Thank You for your continuing interest. At the moment I cannot provide
you
a
screen shot of the error message... Nor can I give it to you
verbatum... I
am
away from both of those computers until about mid-January.
I can not determine that there is any reason for this to be happening
on
two
different computers at the same time... But it seems to tell me that
the
"settings" are the same in both computers?
What I don't understand is; I do not believe this is a result of
"setting
changes" since I believe I have not changed any settings since I first
began
using the computers. And, this was more than a year between the times
the
computers were new.
It makes me wonder if an online Microsoft update or patch has caused
this
to
happen? I also get on-line Virus updates from McAfee.
All I can tell you is that after copying to a different directory; I am
denied access to that directory and the copied or cut/pasted files.
The cut/paste was a disaster... I lost the files completely, and when I
look
at the directory, the files are listed, but take up "0" space which
means
they are not there and I'm denied access to the "files". And, the
second
time
I try to access the directory, chanches are I will be denied access.
Surprisingly, I seem to be able to "move" .pdf files by copy or
cut/paste
to
new directories without harm. Typically, they are moved from the
default
"Documents" Folder.
When I have tried to remove or delete a "Directory" that I have tried
to
copy files to, I am denied access and therefore cannot remove the
directory.
I do not recall seeing a security tab in the properties. I have a
General,
Custom and Summary Tab. The attributes are: Read-Only, Hidden and
Archive.
When I've been able to check, it seems all of the files I'm denied
access
to
have had the "Archive" block checked. I have un-checked the block, but
this
has had no impact and when I again look, the "Archive" is again
checked.
AutoCAD, Word and Excel files are the ones impacted by whatever has
happened.
I use an HP-CD-Writer program to write files from the computers to a
CD.
In
the past this has worked well for my purposes, the day I started this
inquiry, I was informed by an error message that I was denied access
and
the
HP-CD Writer could not accept the Directories/files for copying to a
CD.
I am truly at a loss to understand what has happened.
Thanks for any help or guidence you can provide.

Hi Ojos,
Not sure if I'm understanding it properly, what do you see under the
Security tab? If possible, kindly do a screenshot and have it posted
it
here
(save as JPG or GIF).

Thanks for your comment Jabez Gan.
I have checked the properties on the files/directories when I'm
able.
All
have been checked for "archive". Once access is denied, it's not
possible
to
"always" check the properties again.

Hi Ojos,
Right right clicking on the files/folder, and select Properties.
Under
security, check if your User has any access to it.

The first time this happened I thought I had done somehthing
wrong!
Now, I know that it can happen with copy or cut & paste. Right
now a
New
Directory cannot be accessed and the files cut and pasted to that
new
directory cannot be accessed.
This was all done through Windows Explorer in two different
computers
both
running Windows XP Home addition with all Microsoft updates and
patches.
The two computers are a Sony PCV-RX752 Vaio and a Dell Latitude
Notebook.
These are stand alone computers, not net-worked. Access to the
internet
is
direct by ethernet cable using Internet Explorer. All sharing is
off.
Your help would be appreciated. I have some AutoCAD drawings and
Word
and
Excel files I would like to reclaim for use.
I can't delete empty data directories either. Access is denied.
Thanks
