My hard drive keeps coming on for no apparent reason. It runs five or ten
minutes, stops, and then starts again fifteen or twenty minutes later. It
doesnt actually seem to do anything. It just sits there and grinds away. Do
you have any idea why it might be doing this and what I could do about it?
This is a new Acer PC with an 80 gigabyte hard drive running windows xp
service pack 2. I'm not actually at the computer when it does this. I just
have the computer turned on. Its not the internet because it does this
whether I'm on line or not. It doesnt generate much CPU usage. Somewhere
between 2% and 4%. Thanks.

Sometimes anti-virus software performs a scan, which would show this kind of
activity.
