Is there a public document that discusses the process used by a server to
place a signature on a LUN when using NTFS?

Disk signatures get written to the LUN before the file system or partitions
are created. Signatures are assigned when the O/S initializes the disk
(manually in NT/2000, automatic in 2003) and written to the MBR. The
