Acoustic Localization (Beginner needs help) |
|
|
Dear all,
I am a student and a beginner in research and I want to learn abou
localisation in the areas of microphone arrays. Can anyone recommend goo
books (clear explanation) on localisation?
Does anyone know of sites with localisation matlab codes so that I ca
pick up faster?
Thanks so much!
Regards,
Stella |

Optimum Array Processing, by Van Trees -- not sure about clear
explanations (maybe it was me, but I found it quite heavy to
read), but it does cover the topics pretty thoroughly.

There are some links on my site that may be helpful.
http://www.signalsguru.net/links/resources.html
You might want to talke a look at Brandstein's thesis. There is also a
little bit about microphone arrays on my thesis page.
If you're going to do something simple like correlation, you might want
to take a look at Yu-Kang's thesis on microhpone arrays
(www.rose-hulman.edu). That is how I learned. I don't know if the
library will give you a loan.
If you're going to be working with acoustics in closed in areas, take a
look at the small room image model. There are some well known papers
on it. You'll also need to learn about fractional delay.
There are references to all these papers in my thesis, which I will
post sometime in the near future. Good luck.

The books by van Trees have already been suggested. Look for one or two
by Ziomek as well (don't remember the titles off the top of my head).
The main principle of acoustic (passive) localization is triangulation:
With
the bearing estimates from two independent arrays (linear arrys in 2D,
planar arrays in 3D), it is a matter of finding the intercetions of the
beams. Very simple in theory, not quite so in practice. The arrays will
show some finite beamwidth, not a thin ray, so you intersect sectors.
Which causes the localization accuracy to get bad. In enclosed rooms
or partially enclosed corridors the free-field propagation equations
the
beamformers are based on, no longer describe the acoustics. Multiple
reflections, standing waves and normal modes become serious problems.
I think you will have your work cut out for you even without matlab
code.

Look for paper on Generalized Cross Correlation (GCC) for estimation of |
time-delays or Time-Difference of arrival (TDOA).Don't use ordinary
cross-correlation - it doesn't work well except for white noise signals
(with ref to time-delay estimation).
