Security files taking up most of Hard drive |
|
|
Hello - I just purchased a used processor that runs on Windows XP Home edition. It has a 120GB harddrive that has been partitioned into :
C-drive -107GB and
D-drive -4.06GB
After powering it up for the first time, I found that most of the space was used up on both drives. My main concern of course is with the larger capacity C drive, of which 71GB was being used.
What I have done thus far:
1.-the obvious - looked at every file (enabled hidden files) to see if any looked unusually large and cleaned up some leftover video & music files.
2.-disk clean-up, defrag, virus scan.
-Searched everywhere but could not find any files that were taking up so much space.
-Downloaded "SPACEMONGER" -a great program by the way
-This software has a pie-chart which clearly showed that there were 2 large files that were "unscannable".
These huge files were called
1. C\Userdata and
2. C\System Volume Information
They take up 57.5 GB of space!!
I did some research and found out that Windows XP Home edition uses the System Volume Information file for the Security program that does the System Restore. I tried turning off the System Restore function and rebooted the computer. That freed up approx 10 gb of space. But how do I get to the other unscannable files and can I safely remove them?
-Has anyone else encountered this problem before?
-Do you think the person that sold it to me was aware of the problem - We have been in contact via e-mail and he has been trying to troubleshoot with me. He seems to be just as stumped as I am.
Sorry to make this so long - thanks for any help you can offer out there!
