Have new install of Win2003 Std. server on 120G SATA hard
drive and have 2nd 120G SATA drive attached....of course,
initially, 2nd drive doesn't show up in "My Computer"
because it is not partitioned...I want to mirror the 1st
drive to the 2nd drive....but, as I understand it, the
drive must be a "dynamic volume" and it is now a "basic"
disk....the 2nd drive does show up under "Disk Management"
as an "allocated" 2nd "basic" drive....I find no choice
via "right click" or menus which allow me to convert the
primary SATA drive to dynamic....
How can i mirror these drives....do I have to choose
something different during the intial setup/install
phase....is it too late now....also, the information in
the help file says that at "dynamic volume" will be
accessible only to Win2000 and WinXP Pro systems...

This is going to be only a file/data server...nothing
extravagant...

thanks,,

First you need to upgrade your drives to dynamic (in case of the system
drive that will require a reboot). Then you use "Add Mirror" command from
the context menu of the existing volume on the dynamic drive to select other
dynamic drives that will hold the mirrored copy of the initial volume.

Thanks for the response....I know I have to change the
basic drive to a dynamic drive...but there appears no
option for me to do so...right clicking on the disk
listing or on the graphical view in the window below in
Disk Management offers no option to upgrade or change to
dynamic...likewise nothing appears in the tools menu....is
this a symptom of SATA drives (porbably not) or am I
missing something

I was posting too quick, you wrote that you couldn't find the option in
Disk Management.

Anyway, the KB article has detailed instructions where and how you find the
option to upgrade to dynamic disk.

Fix for SATA Problem Marc

Posted: Thu Sep 30, 2004 11:43 am    Post subject: RE: mirroring SATA hard drives Reply with quote

hey marc,

I notice that you have a problem mirroring the 2 drives.. well here is the
question.. is your motherboard SATA raid or non raid.. the way you can tell
is if when you start up your computer, it will come up as a scsi or raid
utility you can access.. If one doesn't come up youwill need a SATA Raid card
that you will be booting from instead of the onboard, thus this is where the
screen comes up that you can create both drives as a mirror. Usually e-bay
has a few good deals on them i picked one up for about $20.00 on e-bay.. I
had the same problem especially with Intel or Foxcon motherboards with the
SATA. As soon as i got the card i was able to Mirror my 2 drives. The brand
i got was silicon immage.. its an awesome card and automatically recognized
by windows 2003 server. just remember when you install the card and after
windows is loaded, install the driver cd.. it will help you mannage
everything from windows. Hope this works out. If you want you can contact me

i hope you have as good luck as i did with it..just make sure it is a SCSI
SATA card, or it will just act as a controller card
