FAT32 doesnt support ntfs, any files after formatting would be lost. You should
never use a quick format.

Hi, Rich.

If I understand correctly, this computer has only a single hard drive, with
all of its space in a single partition, both before and after upgrading to
WinXP.

There are two ways to switch from FAT to NTFS, and they are mutually
exclusive. Which did you use?

1. The Convert command changes the format without losing any of the
volume's contents.

2. Format (whether Quick or not) ignores the previous contents of the
volume and creates a new empty volume using the new format.

If you used Convert, then all the old files should be intact. If you used
Format, then the old files (jpegs and all other) are gone forever - unless
you (or your friend) can afford one of the (usually expensive) disk recovery
services.
