Drive Image 2002 on NTFS |
|
|
Hi
Since a clean install with slip-streamed SP2, I been having the same
problems with DI5 & DI2002. If I don't include the option to verify when
creating images, DI will complete its task whether booting into Caldera DOS
from floppies or from WinXP. If I ask to verify, I get an undocumented error
which states it can't find the file (its just created).
When I try to access the resulting images files from within XP, I get Access
denied. When I check the security settings, they are System only so I
include the Admin group then can get at them. This happens both with DI5 & a
borrowed copy of DI2002.
Can anyone shed any light why DI isn't/can't create image files with at
least the Admin group included like it did before the clean install? DI can
restore these files without me changing the permissions under Dos. What are
the rules for Dos based programs accessing NTFS volumes?
Thanks |

DOS cannot access any NTFS volume,...and some older versions of DOS cannot
even access FAT32 properly. DOS6.22 and older can only do FAT16.

Check out the Sysinternals website: www.sysinternals.com, and the
associated forum. The version offered free doesn't write NTFS, only reads.
The version which will write *apparently* is offered as part of an
administrator's package, and must include paying a significant fee, though
I've not enquired.
However, from what you're describing, DI probably was using its own
techniques since it apparently worked before your install. I have no
personal experience in NTFS, since my DI is very much older, and certainly
wasn't designed to work with XP, and probably not even NT. Might check for
a Symantec forum?
Sorry, not much help,
Joe

There's a general Symantec support NG I'll try, so thanks. I'm wondering if
this is a Group Policy issue with a new install or not as its about
permissions (or appears to be). I still don't know what access these "Dos"
based programs /can/ have to NTFS volumes - probably full access, at least
to uncompressed & unencrypted data. The write version of the Sysinternals
app is very expensive. It's cheaper to dual-boot a 2nd copy of XP!
DI5 is effectively a legacy product & am looking at Acronis's True Image8
with interest rather than the new Ghost. The important thing is that I used
to be able to run DI5 from XP's Task Scheduler to create then verify images
during the night but can't now, although it's still just about usable
manually.

Regmon, Diskview etc |

Yes, I've looked at the Acronis product too. TerraByteUnlimited is also
offering a product in addition to BING (I think it's available as a package
currently) but I haven't looked at it yet.
