Right-click on drive devices produces hourglass |
|
|
Toshiba M10-S405 40Gb, with 512Mgb ram.
When I right-click on a drive device in Windows Explorer or
My Computer, instead of a drop down menu for properties, I
get an hourglass. Some times properties shows up in two
seconds, sometimes it takes 30 seconds, sometimes the
hourglass just hangs. Equally, when left-clicking on a drive
device and then choosing file, from the menu bar, the drop
down window acts the same (two seconds, 30 seconds, hang-up).
This applies to the following experiences:
XP-Pro with SP1 (original configuration)
XP-Pro with SP2 (update)
Vanilla install of OS without applications, vanilla SP2
update without applications
Typical install of OS with applications, typical install
with SP2 update and applications.
I have reinstalled from scratch (reconfigured) four times.
The following is a known problem to Microsoft (see below),
since at least May of 2003.
Since there are no applications installed, just OS from the
applications disks, there are no viruses, or non-Microsoft
provided software.
The behavior is not predictable. So, this time, no hang-ups.
five minutes later on the same boot, total hangup (with no
action in between). Clear the hangup via Task Manager and no
hangup or 30 second wait. Etc.
Windows KB articles
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819946
and
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;819101
do not cure the problem.
Any insights? |

Hi, Michel.

This often means problems in the hardware, not Windows or other software.
There are many possible causes. Just a few of them: heat buildup; power
supply failing; bad or improperly installed RAM; bad or loose cables; etc.
For random delays in accessing drives, I would suspect the cables: Are they
plugged in properly on all drives and the mobo? Do you have 40-wire cables
when you need 80-wire? Are the jumpers correct (master/slave or cable
select)? Are you using the proper drivers?
How new is your Toshiba? Have you visited Toshiba's website to see if they
know about this kind of problem with their machines?

Good ideas. Thank you for the thoughts.
Toshiba tech told me this is an XP-OS problem.
The computer is a notebook. Mechanical connections are not
likely at issue. I will re-set the memory, and harddrive if
I can get to it.
It runs properly cool and the fan works.
Since this problem occurs at boot up on a fresh (vanilla)
install of original OS (with no
applications)(reconfiguration), I doubt if drivers off the
OS install are at fault. Also, this was not a problem 10
months ago when this unit was put in service.
This problem is identified by MS as a known issue, and this
condition is described by many users at many web sites. Of
interest, the e-mail support regarding XP-SP2 has yet to
suggest fixes listed in the MS KB. This indicates to me MS
does not have clue. The e-tech is asking me to do the basic
start-up elimination stuff (which I have previously done).
If it wasn't so important for me to fix this, I would refuse
to do MS's research work. As it is, I merely resent
providing free labor.

OK. It sounds like you and MS are way ahead of me on this, so I'll back off
and let the real gurus handle it.
Good luck.
