XP Pro Windows Explorer Error/Crash - Modifying Folders Only |
|
|
This problem appeared a few days ago on my Athlon 2800+ PC running XP Pro and
SP2 having been installed successfully some weeks ago.
Renaming or deleting new or existing folders causes Windows Explorer (WE) to
error and close with the statement 'The instruction 0x0395415b referenced
memory at 0x00000000. The memory could not be written. Click OK to terminate
or Cancel to Debug'
The problem does not occur when using Internet Explorer to create or modify
the same folders on my hard drive that caused WE to crash.
I have looked at various forums but cannot find a solution to this specific
problem. I don't believe this to be a RAM or context issue. Also, I have
disabled the Adobe Photoshop 7 thumbnail generation feature.
Can anyone please offer any useful ideas? |

Something that is/was installed doesn't play well with the default operating
system property handlers. A repair install might fix the issue.

Thanks for your comments Dave. After further investigation, it would appear
to be a problem associated with a software application that was installed and
cannot be properly uninstalled. The System restore facility is unable to
rollback prior to the software being installed. Seems like I am going to
have to 'bite the bullet' and rebuild the computer - not the first or last
time!

Hi, Easyman.
Dave's suggestion was to do a "repair install", also known as an "in-place
upgrade", which is somewhat short of "rebuild the computer". ;^} It
reinstalls WinXP itself, but preserves your installed applications and
data - and most of your tweaks. Depending on how much you have installed,
other than the OS itself, this should take only about half as much time as a
clean install.
For Microsoft's official instructions, see this KB article:
How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;q315341
And you might want to check out MVP Michael Stevens' version:
