Raid 1 on Suse 9.1 with SATA drives |
|
|
I set up a Raid 1 on Suse 9.1, and although the /proc/mdstats say both
disks are up, I don't know if the data is really getting mirrored.
I have many questions, some of which are:
1) I'm mirroring everything, but when I change grub to boot to the
second disk first, the machine doesn't boot. Why is that?
2) Do I have to tell the BIOS that I'm using Raid 1? When I boot I
see error messages about Raid 0 and other messages about maping that
look suspicious. Should I be concerned about these?
3) Does the default kernel have the necessary modules compilied in so
Raid 1 will work?
4) What is the best way to test the system to confirm mirroring sucess
or failure?
5) The Suse book says Raid 1 usually has two and only two partitions,
and then goes on to say to partition your disks. What does this mean?
Really? This raises many questions. Can I have more than two
partitions or not? If there are only suppose to be two partitions,
what are they? What happens if you have more than two? Is that a bad
thing? What are the guidlines?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, I look forward to your answers. |
