Didn't AG have a proposal for how to build an x86 with an IA64 mode?
That would be a way to avoid IA64 being confined to an ever smaller
niche. (Which otherwise looks to be in the cards.)

Isn't this the equivalent of trying to design an efficient family
automobile that can at the same time serve as a replacement for the
Space Shuttle?

It would be ... except for the fact that the Space Shuttle is, all by
itself, already an excellent example of the problem.
