Hi, I'm looking for a HSM solution for a customer who wants to put data that
is rarely used on less expensive media.

There should be some means of intelligence behind it.

It doesn't concern e-mail archiving, but archiving of thousands of pictures.

Can you tell me what products are available from VERITAS, LEGATO and HP
today Q4-2004 ?

I would recommend looking at NuView. Their use of the stub file is
fairly unique and interesting, it's really more like an inode than a
stub. I haven't actually tested them but their whitepapers look good
and I did have them in for a presentation, which was intriguing.

When the time comes for me to look at HSM they will be on my short
list.

What operating system will manage the data?

Whatever OS you are moving data from/to would be my guess. It runs on
Windows and several *nix so the choice is yours.

In the mid 90s I became somewhat of an
HSM expert because of a project I was working
on. At the time, all the HSM solutions were pretty bad
in different ways. Part of the problem was that the
OSs didn't have well defined hooks into the file system
to let the HSMs intercept file calls. Things are
probably much better now.

One amusing thing I remember is that with one
of the vendor's products it was possible to
query the metadata database to see how
much data was on each side of the optical disks
that HSM used for long term storage. What made me
very worried was that for one disk, the database
showed that there were 3 sides!! The vendor tried
to say that this was a problem with the database
that they were using, which was Berkeley Ingres.
The ironic thing about this is that I was the
system manager for the Berkeley Postgres group,
which had previously invented Berkeley Ingres.
We were shocked that anybody was using Berkeley
Ingres for any commercial applications.
