Hi,

I have been trying to find a digital recorder that can record on a
hard disk or RAM memory which could be then loaded on a PC, and which
can record continuosly for 2 weeks - non stop.
I did not have any success.
Is it easy to make one myself eg by connecting chips and hardware
units?

Many thanks!

George

Yes. Most sound cards have analog inputs. Search on digitizing vinyl
records.

So you plug the line output from the mic into the sound card, and make
mp3 out of the resulting stream. At low fidelity, 28kbps you can store
a great deal of data in a hard disk.

Even without MP3 compression, you can save 2 weeks of audio at a sample rate
of 11.5KHz in under 30Gig of disk:

(11.5KHz * 2 bytes per sample * 3600 seconds per hour * 350 hours)

is about 28Gig.

Normally the sound card is installed in a PC. If you want small size
and don't need weeks of unattended operation I think there are flash
memory based music players that have a voice input as well.

DO you need a processor to connect the card to the hard disk? I presure you do?
Is there any solution that could be of a small size?

What is the application? Have you checked the suppliers of security
equipment? Is this a class project?

What I had in mind was like

(up to) 36 hours and it runs off 1 battery. So if you can dump it once a
day you are good to go.

....I think he said he wanted 2 weeks of unattended operation and it had
to be of a small size. Almost sounds like it's to be used for
surveillance.

Then perhaps he should have posted to alt.spy, or did a search on audio

surveilance equipment.
What is the smallest PC that one can buy these days? A little laptop
with about a 50 GB drive? A mac mini?

A PDA and a 40GB iPod or 60GB iPod photo?

Hi,

Thanks for responding. I guess I would need a processor to connect the
sound card to the harddisk.
I have tried both Iriver 1GB flash player and Ipod 40GB but the first
is lacking enough memory, the second stops when the file gets to 2GB
(I think limit is the application not the OS).

I was hoping it might have been easy to connect a sound card to the
hard disk.

Cheers

It is extremely easy. One plugs them into the same computer. the issue
of file size is a programming one. There is no reason that the stream
couldn't be broken up into hour long chunks.

You still haven't outlined the paramethers of your problem.
I still think google search on surveillance digital sound is your best
bet to get started.

Several OSs have 2GB (32bit signed arithmetic) file limitations. Years
ago this wasn't much of a limitation, but digital video easily bumps up
against (read: crashes into) this limitation, so IFAIK it's been fixed
in later releases of Windows, even.

If you can find a firewire sound card, it should plug directly into a
firewire disk drive. Maybe a firewire DV camera? You get video
"free".

Hi,

Just plug the firewire sound card to a firewire hard disk?
Then the program would be done in assembly? Or I do not need a program at all?

Anyway for those who asking, all this is for company use.

Thanks

George
