DDS4 tape drive question |
|
|
i have an Archive Python 06408-xxxx DDS4 Tape drive that came installed in a
Dell PowerEdge server and I'm using ArcServe 2000 Advanced for my backup
software. My question is what is the largest amount of data (in gbs) that I
will be able to backup to a DDS4 tape? Do DDS4 tapes all have a standard
limit? Is it 20gb raw, and 40gb compressed? I can't seem to find anything
definitive on the web so I thought i'd ask here.
thanks for the assistance.

It's 20GB raw. From that 20GB you need to deduct about 5-10% for overhead
for the backup software itself and for internal tape defect handling. Don't
be surprised if you get 18 or 19GB raw capacity. The drive supports hardware
compression, with real data you may see 1.5:1 or so. The 2:1 assumption
that's always quoted is a marketing dream.

That's the claim, though if you have a lot of already-compressed files
such as media files, they won't compress any further. |

so let's say that I need to back up like 70gigs. is there a DDS tape drive
out there that can handle that?

Not yet under all circumstances. Rumor of a DAT160 (80GB native) follow-on
after DAT72 is floating around, but I have not heard of a planned release by
anyone.
You may want to look at Exabyte VXA-2. 80 GB native @ 6MB/s. It's not a DDS
drive but very reliable, less expensive and available today.

Yes:
Run away from DDS drives.
Low reliability on flimsy tapes, tape tension over the drum is high,
tapes wear out quickly. etc etc
Go for a used SDLT unit instead.

Wholehearted second. I had nothing but trouble with DDS, worked sort
of okay at first but it just didn't hang in and quickly became
unreliable. Now running used DLT (sort of like Foz recommends)(but
with a power on reset issue per a nearby article subject: "Re: blinky
TH3AA leds")
: Go for a used SDLT unit instead. |
