He's still around, but his posts are less frequent and more sporadic
now. I think this means that we're approaching the end of the normal
troll cycle and he'll be shuffling off to some other ng at some point.

Robert! What were you thinking? You know that he as bots

this is embarrassing. i went to news2web.com (google groups takes to long
show posts) and saw all sorts of postings and then started wondering why my
newsserver was missing them. then i recalled, about 5 days ago when
everyone was threatening Beenie with "killfiling" him, i was wondering how
to do that since i am not UNIX or whatever. then i discovered "Rules" in my
OE and they had a mechanism for news. so i set it so that for any article
with "me@privacy.net" in the From: header to "Do not show article". BUT IT
DIDN'T WORK! (at least at first.) so i just thought that this was crappy
micro$hit and literally forgot about it (that i had him killfiled). it
looks like, perhaps after 2 or 3 days, it *did* kick in. i wonder why it
took so long?

anyway, everyone else should do likewise.

It would appear that Bristow-Johnson has flipped.

He started by disagreeing,
then he got personal,
and now he is originating personal attacks which are
OT and childish in their innuendo and subject matter.

Those who seek to complain about trolls in this NG
seem to need to look no further than RBJ.

So you initiated your childish insults, and
now you want to run away and hide under a bridge?

Sounds like the behaviour of a troll.

He must be very old. I've found evidence of him from the 18th century.

Try the beta version of Google groups:

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/comp.dsp

Messes up the text fonts from time to time but is *much* faster, at
least for me. My posts take about 5 minutes to get there - the "old"
Google needed about 2-5 hours for that.

I think the rules filtering in OE works at download time. So if you had already
downloaded the headers for comp.dsp, then applied the filter, you wouldn't see
the effect until the next time you downloaded headers (i.e. next session).

Yep, I just checked the help file, and here is what is says:

To apply a rule to downloaded messages
New rules you create, whether for mail or news messages, will be applied to new,
incoming messages. To apply rules to messages that have already been downloaded
to your computer, you can do the following:

1.. On the Tools menu, point to Message Rules, and then click News or Mail,
depending on whether you want to apply mail rules or news rules to downloaded
messages.

2.. In the Message Rules dialog box, click the Apply Now button.

it's just called "Rules" on my Mac version of OE.

i also have a tab for Outgoing mail (or posts). dunno what i might use it
for.

for whatever reason, i thought that i downloaded additional Beenhead posts
after applying it (and concluded that either i didn't know how to use it or
that it just didn't work - typical of micro$hit) but i may have been
mistaken older unread posts for newly downloaded unread posts.
