I am running Windows XP and Windows 98SE on separate hard drives on a dual
boot on a Compaq PresarioS6000NX. My problem is that I can see only one hard
drive at a time. I would like to be able to see the files on both hard
drives with either operating system. I am using BootIt from terrabyte and
have everything unhidden. On one of my other computers I have the dual boot
on the same hard drive and can see all the files from either OS. But not
when I use two separate hard drives. Is there some way I can fix this?
Thanks.

Hi,

It is not because you are using two separate hard drives. Windows XP uses a
file system called NTFS, which is not available for Windows 98. You'll be
able to view both HDD from both OS if you have FAT32 in Windows XP HDD to
FAT32. To do it, you'll have to reformat the Windows XP HDD and choose FAT32
during Windows XP setup. This will erase all the data in that drive.

But having NTFS file system is better than having FAT32 file system as it
offers more features such as user level security for your files and folders
locally, disk and file compression, encryption, and disk quotas.

Hope that helped.

Shafiee.

Flawed logic Shafie. XP can read NTFS, so XP should be able to see the fat32
drive.

Steve
It is more than likely the boot-it software. You do not need this third
party junk to create a dual boot. MS Operating systems do it automatically if
you install in the correct order. They can be configured after the fact to do
what you want (with a little sweat) if you don't meet the standard scenario
for creating a dual boot.

But that is beside the point. Your machine is 2.7 Ghz celeron with base
install of 256 MB of ram. Add ram and run a virtual PC software for 98. You
will get the benefit of not having to reboot everytime you want to use 98. (I
don't why you would need 98, but that is a different issue and probably
nothing more than a personal predjudice)

Try VMware it works pretty nicely, or Microsofts Virtual PC.

I actually only want to install a second hard drive with 98 on a machin
with XP existing (the 98 CPU died). Can I see the files on the 98 driv
if I boot up in XP (just use the 98 HD as a slave)? If not, how do
set up a dual boot and see each drive individually?

Any info appreciated.
