Shadow Copies on WSS2003 |
|
|
Hi all,
I'm having problems with shadow copies on a Windows 2003 NAS box. Does
anyone know if there are any limitations of shadow folders on Windows
Storage Server 2003?
Basically, I can only see 9 shadow copies when it should have been
producing them twice a day for the past couple of months. I read in
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/windowsserver2003/library/DepKit/261cfe7d-4509-4310-b2f7-2222f0d15f07.mspx
that "If you plan to store the shadow copies on the same volume as the
user files, note that a burst of disk I/O can cause all shadow copies to
be deleted. If you cannot tolerate the sudden deletion of shadow copies,
use a volume that will not be shadow copied, preferably on separate
disks, for storing shadow copies.", so I tried using VSSADMIN.exe to put
the storage on another disk with the following command:
vssadmin add shadowstorage /For=D: /On=E:
and I got the following error:
Error: Maximum number of shadow copy storage associations already reached
so I went to the GUI and found the "Located on this volume" option set
to "D:" and greyed out so I cannot change it.
Is this a limitation of Windows Storage Server or is it something else?
Many thanks for any help,

It's not a limit in WSS2k3.
You might want to try 'vssadmin list shadows<enter>' and see what is set
now.

Hi, |
Sorry for the long time since the reply.
I get lots of the following:
Contents of shadow copy set ID: {<snip>}
Contained 1 shadow copies at creation time: 7/5/2005 12:00:07 PM
Shadow Copy ID: {<snip>}
Original Volume: (D:)\\?\Volume{<snip>}\
Shadow Copy Volume:
\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy<number>
Originating Machine: <MachineA>
Service Machine: <MachineA>
Provider: 'Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0'
Type: ClientAccessible
Attributes: Persistent, Client-accessible, No auto release, No

Differential
They all appear to be stored in the same place.
Thanks,
