usb2 200gb maxtor hdd corruption...

i have a 200gb ide maxtor drive used externally on a toshiba satelitte pro
a10 laptop running uptodate xpsp2... have been using this drive for 6 months
perfectly... its formatted as 4 x 50gb ntfs partitions and used for music
creation... the drive is connected with a (usually reliable) AT2 usb2 to ide
adaptor... then for no obvious reason one day a BSD and then all partitons
corrupted unable to be seen... have used all usual recovery software but only
to limited success (on usb2 & direct ide on desktop).. the first partition
recovers easily and completely but the other 3 i can only partly recover in
RAWsector recovery.... have lost a lot of my own music & data files. any
ideas as i want to use this drive again but dont want a repeat... have lost a
lot of music i have created over the years (and have found old cd/dvd backups
are not as reliable as one would like)
