Questions concerning attaching a W2K3 server to a SAN |
|
|
Hello,
I am new to setting up Windows to attach to SANs, so please be forgiving.
I recently setup a W2K3 server using a single port Qlogic HBA to an HP EVA.
My single port connection is connected to a SAN switch that is daisy-chained
another SAN switch. Each switch has its own controller connection into the
SAN.
After the SAN side configurations were setup (zones setup, disks defined), I
setup Qlogic's SANsurfer utility on my W2K3 server. After walking through
SANsurfer's setup wizard, I rebooted my server. I then went into Disk
Management and was presented with a wizard for setting up my new disks. All
is good, I just have a few questions.
The wizard setup Dynamic disks...is there a reason for this? Can\should I
use a basic disk? My local Disk2 is defined as a basic disk.
In Disk Management, my SAN disk is listed as Disk0 and Disk 1 with Disk0
showing online, Healthy, NTFS. Disk1 is labeled as Foreign and does not show
anything to the right where you'd see normal disk info (NTFS, Healthy, size,
etc). What is Disk 1? Is this the the secondary path into the SAN sitting
idle in case my primary path fails?
Disk0 and Disk1 have small errors icons. Event viewer has an event that
says "An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0 during a paging
operation." I do not have paging files defined on the SAN disk....do I need
to worry about this?
Thanks for any and all comments. |

fine!

then you get showed one drive twice! for this case you need a tool like DDM
(duplex data manager) or powerpath

you should stop the wizard when ist start. then you can create "basic
disks".
then you can do rightclick on the disk (first row left) and "initialize" it.
after that you can format it.
this would create a "basic disk".
for what do do with dynamic or basic disk depends on what you want to write
on it.
basic disks are fixed as 10,20,40 GB. if full, then full.
dynamic disks can be added by other disks and you can then relarge it as
neccessary.
but this feature you shuold use on your SAN anyway so there is no need to
set it on the server.

about your doublepath the serv tries to write his pagefile on "both" path.
this probably occurs
your error.
install ddm or powerpath and the prob will be cleared.

Thanks for your reply Steve.
I downloaded and installed HP's MPIO driver and that took care of the "dual
disks". This MPIO driver is provided by MS to storage vendors who then
provide it to their customers.
Thanks Again.
