Hi,

I was just wondering if Blade servers are cost effective. From the
prices on the web, it appears they are more expensive than equivalent
1U servers. Am I missing something here?

Also how they from heat dissipation parspective. Can you fully load a
chassis with blades without encountering heating issues.

Would like to hear about experience in working with blades from leading
vendors.

Thanks in advance.

No. Blade servers are a scheme to make more money, and apart from
their manufacturers, they should be mostly only useful to people
who are space constrained to make the somewhat higher CPU/rack density
of blades an important factor.

I am sure that you can design rack and air conditioning in a way
that will generally enable this, if you observe the concrete
specs of the vendor.

Sorry, never bought some, because they were not cost effective to us.

How do folks here judge the component sharing (cooling, power supply)
of a blade server, compared to the same number of 1U systems, from
a reliability / uptime perspective?

best regards
Patrick

Blade servers are slightly more space efficient. The main thing is
that they have a higher level of integration. Good blade servers
integrate things like network switches, IO buses, etc. to minimize
cable clutter. This goes far beyond simple power supply and cooling.

Yes, with a well engineered design. Of course that depends to a great
extent on your machine room environment. A recent employer recorded
temps of around 165 F. inside a SGI Altix 3000 (not a blade server)
cabinet due to accidentally blocked floor vents.
