I am trying to retrieve some data from a Win98 hard drive using my USB 2.0
enclosure on a WinXP machine. Disk management sees a "Healthy active drive",
but does not give it a volume name and I can't assign it a drive letter
(grayed out).

I searched through the groups, but couldn't find my exact problem. I really
need to get the data off of this drive. Any help would be appreciated.

I did put the drive inside a diferent XP machine and the same thing
happened...saw the drive, but would not assign it nor let me assign a drive
letter.

Thanks.

First, take a look at KB297694. This was helpful to me, even though it did
not completly solve my USB drive problems.
