GatherWriterMetadata doesn't return |

I am developing an application that uses Volume Shadows (VSS). So far I have only been testing on WinXP SP2. I am using a slightly modified version of Vshadow at the current time.
My code will run fine while generating shadows and removing them over and over every 5 to 10 minutes. Every so often my PC will get in a state that GatherWriterMetadata never returns. So far only rebooting will fix it. I've tried restarting the service but in this state the volume shadow copy service will not stop. It just hangs up.
Has anyone ever seen this problem? Can someone suggest an approach for me to use to fix or at least isolate this problem?
