How to recover my W2K3 Server ? |
|
|
Hi all,
I have a windows 2003 Server which is always rebooting during the OS
startup, I can see bios start up, can see the windows startup screen,
but during the first startup phase, the server indefinitly reboots.
I have tried to startup in Safe Mode, in Last Knwon good configuration,
but the server won't startup. The same loop is in progress (bios, os
startup, reboot).
The only backup I have for this system has burn ... (remote storage
local burned out !)
I have 2 SATA Hard drives configured as miror dynamic volumes, and
trying to boot on the miror does not work.
My hardware vendor diagnostic a hard disk failure and give me a new disk.
Now I want to knwow what is the best strategy for restoring my installation.
1. how to recover the data on the second disk ?
2. can I install a new w2K3 on the new disk, connect the second disk and
recover data ?
3. I have a software backup (made with windows backup) in the second disk.
Note: I'm french and not an expert in the domain. If someone speaking
french have a solution, I can call it by phone to find quickly the best
solution.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Your best bet is to install the new drive and install a new copy of the OS.
Once that is up & running, add in one of the mirrored drives and you _may_
be able to get some data off of it - it really depends on the nature and
length of time the drive(s) were bad.

Pat,
Thanks, this is I allready done. I have installed en fresh Windows
Server 2003 on a new disk, perform a check and repair on one of the hard
drive.
Finally, I was able to restart on one of the 2 mirror.
Now I will try to find a new solution for our server, perhaps an
external solution.
Regards,
Guillaume.

Re: How to recover my W2K3 Server ? |

hi guillaume,
a few tipps for a better server config here in follow:
1) using sata disks: i that case you usually should have a onboard sata
raidcontroller. therefore a radi 1 is recommended and safe against harddisk
failures sofar
2) general its recommended to biuld a raid 1 for the system-partition,
seperate from the data partition (makes it easier to restore in case of
failure)
3) the raid 1 array should always physical separatly and not shared on the
same array the data are provided.
i.e. you have 5 disks on 2 controllers. use the first controller to biuld
the raid1 and the second for the data-array such as raid5
4) ntbackup: if you only use ntbackup, than make a full backup daily of
the system partition (at least the c-drive and the system state.) and store
the bkf-file to a different disk on another server or SAN-Storage (by SAN,
not storing on the boot-drive!) and actualise your emergency floppy!
5) if it is a domain controller, than you should choose the recommendings
1-2 above for shure
6) install a professional backup software with desaster recovery option and
configure it as recommended by the software-online help.
by doing so, yo'll be able to restore your system in less than 1 hour.
if you install to a bootable SAN-Disk yous OS than make sure, that you have
a shaddowcopy on the san of the boot-partion as well becaus in that case,
ntbackup won't helps you to restore.
greetings from munich, steve ;-)
