I was asking about 8051 vs. PIC vs. AVR. Should I be looking at 68HC908?
What is it like?

Could be a good choice.

If you throw the gates wide open there will be a
stampede of suggestions and you will end more confused
then ever. Usenet is just like real-life, only more so.

It would be a great help in providing some intelligent
suggestions (Pull the other one gov', it's got bells
on it.) if we knew more about the application. You have
said it is for a course, but is it:

o Undergrad, high-school, tech-college

o Introductory course in uP, or
o Course in embedded systems, or
o 'Build your own robot' circus or
o Homework assignment to select a uC

Can you provide more information?

Actually, I'm in a half-hobbyist, half-professional situation... As a hobby,
I've done lots of project and written many magazine articles. As a
professional, I provide some assistance doing microcontroller projects for
our robotics group, although my own research rarely involves
microcontrollers. I've used 8051 (a little) and PIC (a lot) (as well as
8088 assembly language quite a lot, long ago, and all the major high-level
languages on PCs, all the time).

I've found time this year to refresh my microcontroller skills and was
wondering whether to stick with PIC, move back to 8051, or move to something
else. I've about decided on AVR. The PIC instruction set is *odd* -- the
only thing in its favor is that we get good tools, and the quirky
instruction set is so small that you can easily remember all of it. And
those, in turn, might be substantial advantages.

Seems to me more like a souped up 6805.
