Where can I get some step by step instructions on how to understand the new
versions of backup on 2000 and 2003 server which now use remote storage?

As featureless as it was, I love NT4's ability to just simple backup
everything with a quick command line and do differentials each night. Now
that I have so much data, it requires and autoloader so trying to create a
"set it and forget it" backup routine that I had before with NT 4 is really
a hassle on my Sony AIT 4 tape autoloader.

Here is what my goal is.

Weekly on the weekend - Create a full backup of the system including system
state. This takes about 2 tapes
Nightly - Do a differential backup of the system including system state to
different tape each night.

This way on Monday I can take the double tape set with me then each
following night I can take the single additional tape with me so that I have
a complete set of the data. On Tuesday I will take home the full backup and
the Monday differential. On Wednesday I will return the Monday differential
tape to the boxand take home the full backup and the Tuesday differential
and so on. This way I only have three tapes at most at any given time.

A helicopter pilot was lost in the fog in the Seatle area and could not find
the airport. He decided to fly up to a building and see if he could write a
note on a board to see if they could tell him where he was. He flew up to
the large building and showed his note on the board to a person in the
window which said:

WHERE AM I?

The person in the window jotted on a large piece of paper:

YOU'RE IN A HELICOPTER.

The pilot then knew where the airport was and flew directly to the airport
where he told his friends of his adventure. His freinds did not understand
how he could know were he was just from that rediculous answer. The pilot
then explained that since the response by the person in the window was 100%
acurate but it contained no useful information what-so-ever so he know he
was at the Microsoft Technical Support building.

I have checked the help.

I'm not saying that i am from MS technical support. just to get you on

your way. Start the backup tool and go to the schedule tab. click on add
job.. this enables you to use th gui to set the backups you want in a
schedule you like. I've checked it on wxp adn w2k3 is not much
different. To do it the hard way is to build your own batch file with
command line options.

Open the help. click on upper left corner, clikc jump to url and paste:
ms-its:C:\WINDOWS\Help\ntcmds.chm::/ntbackup_command.htm
and try some options.

and for your system state backup, this can't be combined with a
differential backup.

You're welcome

RSM.

Perhaps you should just take your attitude and check out google.

Nice way to treat people that thought they were helping you.

Excuse me? I didn't know that cracking a joke about the MS help files was
attitude, but this is.....

What's it to you? Its a joke between myself and Arie. I hope Arie thought
it was funny, but I could care less if you do. I appreciate Arie's input as
demonstrated in the post you responded to where I said "Thanks" to Arie.

I do my part on these boards because I enjoy helping people like I did with
Tom and Jason with the problems they were having with backup and partitions.
I also post on a number of other boards as well answering when ever I know
the answer.

Maybe you should not comment when your not involved and maybe you should
look up the correct answer on google yourself before you respond to a post.
Partition Magic works on NTFS whether it is a workstation or server if you
use it correctly so you mistakenly elimiated an option that Kelly may have
had with her partitioning problem.

Actually RSM is not directly related to backup. Altho it can use tape

devices it is to be used for off loading not frequently used files to a
MO or tape device and then uses NTFS reparse points to gave the file
name let on the original volume and the data moved to the 'less
expensive' device.

If you have Windows k23 enterprise edition available use the help to get
an overview of remote storage etc ...

hth & closing the thread
